KATJA PASANEN
MENTAL PERFORMANCE SPECIALIST · FOUNDER OF MENTAL PERFORMANCE ARENA®
I work at the intersection of mental performance, sport, coaching, health sciences and human behaviour.
My work is grounded in a combination of multidisciplinary knowledge and more than three decades of experience across sport, healthcare, coaching, leadership and performance environments.
I founded Mental Performance Arena® to bring these perspectives together, and to turn knowledge about mental performance into practical ways of preparing, performing and growing.
FROM SPORT TO MENTAL PERFORMANCE
Sport has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started in track and field and later found my way into ice hockey. In the early 1990s, I began coaching boys’ ice hockey teams.
From the beginning, I was curious about the individual behind the athlete. My coaching notebooks from those years already included notes on players’ individual strengths, motivation and enjoyment, as well as recovery and sleep. I wanted to understand what helped different players learn, develop and get the best out of themselves.
That curiosity soon extended beyond sport. I wanted to understand people, development and performance from different perspectives, and I actively sought opportunities to learn — through practical experience, formal education, and from people and ideas outside my own field.
At the same time, I kept studying. Psychology, sport and exercise psychology, social psychology, sports medicine, health sciences, coaching, leadership and management have each added a different perspective to the same questions: What helps people perform when it matters? What gets in the way? And how can the conditions for performance be developed?
My professional experience has developed in much the same way. Sport and coaching have remained a constant thread, while work in healthcare, leadership and other performance environments has allowed me to see people and performance from different angles.
These experiences and fields of study are different, but they have always been connected by the same curiosity. Each has added another perspective to my evolving understanding of the person, performance and the environment in which performance takes place.
Today, that multidisciplinary perspective is central to the way I work. I do not see mental performance as separate from performance itself. Performance emerges through the interaction between the individual, the task, the situation and the environment.
BUILDING MENTAL PERFORMANCE ARENA®
My interest in mental performance gradually developed from individual athletes to the environments and people around them.
In 2017, I launched ProCoachK in Cologne, Germany, focusing on a question that had become increasingly important in my work: how does the way a coach acts, communicates and leads influence an athlete and their performance?
That work deepened my interest in the relationship between the individual and the performance environment. Performance is never created by the athlete alone. Coaches, communication, expectations, relationships, roles and the surrounding culture all influence what becomes possible in the moment.
Over time, another challenge appeared again and again: knowing is not the same as being able to use what you know when it matters.
An athlete may have the physical ability and technical skills to perform. A coach may know what good leadership looks like. A team may understand how it wants to operate. A professional may have years of expertise.
And yet performance can look very different when pressure, expectations, uncertainty, emotions, confidence, attention, relationships, roles or changing circumstances enter the situation.
This increasingly focused my work on the space between what a person is capable of and what becomes available in the moment of performance.
Mental Performance Arena® developed from this continuing work — bringing together decades of practical experience, multidisciplinary learning and an increasing understanding of the interaction between the individual and the performance environment.
Rather than treating mental performance as a separate addition to performance, MPA approaches performance through the interaction between the individual, task, situation and environment. It translates knowledge into practical ways of developing the capacities, skills and everyday practices that support preparation, performance and growth.
The environments in which I work have continued to expand — from individual athletes and coaches to teams, organisations and international sport. The context and demands may change, but the underlying questions remain remarkably similar.
How do we prepare for what the moment requires?
How do we access our abilities when it matters?
And how do we learn and grow from what happens?
These questions continue to guide both my work and the development of Mental Performance Arena®.
Prepare. Perform. Grow.

Early coaching notes, 1990s.
Individual strengths, motivation, enjoyment, recovery and sleep were already part of how I thought about developing young athletes.

Learning beyond formal education.

A MULTIDISCIPLINARY FOUNDATION
My professional foundation has never been built within a single discipline.
Over the years, I have deliberately developed my knowledge across psychology and human behaviour, sport and performance, health and wellbeing, coaching, leadership and business. More recently, technology has added another perspective to this work.
These fields are different, but together they help me examine performance as a whole — from the individual and their behaviour to the demands of the task, the surrounding environment and the systems that support development.

WORKING ACROSS PERFORMANCE ENVIRONMENTS
My work today spans different levels and contexts of performance — from individual athletes and coaches to teams, organisations and international sport.
I have worked across elite and professional sport, youth development, coach education, leadership and organisational environments. Working across these different contexts has reinforced an important principle in my work: the same solution does not fit every person or every performance environment.
The principles of mental performance can be shared, but how they are applied must make sense for the individual, the demands of the situation and the environment in which performance takes place.
This is why I focus on translating knowledge into practical approaches that people can understand, practise and use where performance actually happens.

Mission and Vision
MISSION
To help people recognise, develop and use their strengths and capabilities when they matter.
Mental Performance Arena® makes mental performance practical and trainable, helping people, teams and performance environments build the awareness, skills and practices that support preparation, performance, wellbeing and growth.
The aim is not only to perform better, but to create the conditions in which people can develop, trust themselves and grow into more of who they can be.
VISION
A future where mental performance is understood and developed as an integral part of performance — without losing sight of the person behind it.
We envision performance environments where people are supported not only in what they do, but also in how they develop, grow and become more fully themselves.
Mental Performance Arena® aims to contribute to this change internationally by connecting knowledge, practical application, education, tools and collaborative development.

Values
Together
Development does not happen in isolation.
People perform and grow in interaction with others. We believe in sharing knowledge, learning from different perspectives and creating environments where people can contribute, belong and develop together.
Trust
Growth requires trust.
Trust in yourself, in other people and in the process creates space to learn, take responsibility, face challenges and perform with greater freedom — especially when the moment is demanding.
Continuity
Development is a process, not a single moment.
Mental performance grows through repeated practice, reflection, experience and adaptation. What we prepare, practise and learn today becomes part of how we perform and grow tomorrow.
